Aussie term of the day...
"Keen" - they say keen a LOT! Don't be surprised when you hear it rather often in daily conversation. In fact, I have actually come to enjoy it. For example; "Hey guys, I'm heading out to the shopping center if anyone is keen to come along!" etc.
It was the start of another week here in Australia and I
would say it has started out with lots of good… and a little interesting. I took the bus for the first time today on
the way home from school, seeing as I only had one class this morning and no
one else was heading home quite yet. It wasn’t until I had been sitting on the
bus for a good 20 minutes that I realized I had gotten on the wrong one. I was supposed to get on the 210, not the
208, and realized a little late that I was in for a nice scenic tour around
Townsville! But I will say, if you ever want the scenic tour for pretty cheap,
just get on the wrong bus. It only costs
students $1.50.
When the bus finally made the stop I needed at Willows
shopping center, I decided to pop in for a few things that I needed to
get. Just for a few minutes though, that’s
what I told myself.
Sometimes being a friendly person can get you into some
very interesting, and sometimes time consuming, situations. Like this time for instance. There was this
environmental group that had set up a table right in the middle of one of the
big hallways and as I was walking by trying miserably to find the Woolworths in
this place, I was stopped by one of the volunteers. Of course he started with
asking me where I was from, then what I was studying while I was in Australia,
and then my field of study gave him a nice little segue into talking about their
cause. “Fisheries and Wildlife huh? Then you must have heard all about this…!” I
have no idea how long I stood there smiling, nodding, and all the while
thinking “Where the heck is that Woolworths??”
As soon as the words “Let’s get you signed up as a member
shall we!” hit my ears I knew it was about time to find that store. It wasn’t that I didn’t agree somewhat with
what they were saying or that is was a cause that didn't need adressing, I just have this rule that I never sign up for things that catch me off guard and
that I don’t know a lot about up front.
Of course he kept trying to push me to sign up and I finally had to end
with “I’m sorry, but not today” before shaking his hand and surprising him with
“By the way, do you know where the Woolworths is?” and going on my way.
I think in the end it took me about 2 hours to get home
when you add up me walking home from the shopping center part as well.
To finish up the afternoon, one of my housemates, Hannah,
and I decided to have a Doctor Who themed dinner party for the two of us! I was
immensely great fun getting together a bunch of random foods like celery,
apples with smiley faces, jelly babies, soufflé, and of course the notorious fish
fingers and custard!
Had you walked in to the
kitchen around that time, as Esther did at one point, you would have seen the
two of us sitting on the kitchen floor waiting for things to cook and bonding over Doctor Who related things while listening to the Doctor Who soundtracks. Good fun!
Evidently there
are a LOT of Doctor Who fans around here as on a daily basis I will usually see
someone with a Doctor Who screen saver on their computer, wearing a Doctor Who
t-shirt, talking about Doctor Who related things… And apparently one of my housemates is one of them! Fantastic bonding
time indeed.
